Philly Daily, where my Crime Beat column appears each week, reports that the Philadelphia Police Department announced that it was going door-to-door to share important information on auto theft prevention and how one can protect one’s vehicle from high-tech thieves.
“Criminals are now using devices that can reprogram your key fob and start your car -silently and within seconds. Most thefts are happening between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m,” the Philadelphia Police stated. “We want to make sure every resident has the tools and knowledge to stay protected.”
The Philadelphia Police offers auto theft crime prevention tips below:
- Lock your vehicle at all times
- Never leave your car running unattended
- Use theft deterrents such as a steering wheel lock, car
alarm, kill switch, and Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) lock
- Don’t leave your key fob near the front door unless it’s in
a Faraday bag
- Park in well-lit or visible areas whenever possible
- Check with your dealership for the latest anti-theft
updates
- Report suspicious activity immediately
- The
Philadelphia Police said that they will be in Philadelphia neighborhoods,
knocking on doors, handing out flyers, and answering questions.
