Outgoing FBI Director Warns That Al Qaeda Danger May Not Have Passed

FBI Director Robert Mueller was interviewed by Fox News.

Outgoing FBI Director Robert Mueller told Fox News Thursday that Al Qaeda “may well have postponed” its plan to attack U.S. diplomatic sites in the Middle East and Africa after Washington scrambled to close them before any terror assault could be staged.

In an interview with Fox’s chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge, Mueller said, “we are closely monitoring the situation” but warned the danger had not passed.

“I would say that it may well have been postponed,” Mueller said of a credible and specific Al Qaeda terror threat that led to the closures of U.S. embassies and consulates across a wide swath of the Muslim world earlier this month.

New FBI Director Confirmed by Senate

The FBI web site offers a piece on the new FBI director's Senate confrmation yesterday:

On July 29, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm James B. Comey, Jr. as the next FBI Director.

“Jim’s experience, judgment, and strong sense of duty will benefit the Bureau and the country as a whole,” said current Director Robert S. Mueller. “He is excited about the prospect of leading an agency of individuals who are united by a fierce desire to do something good for their country.”

In his early career, Comey worked as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and later became the managing assistant U.S. attorney in charge of the Richmond Division in the Eastern District of Virginia. In 2002, he returned to the Southern District of New York as the U.S. attorney.

In 2003, Comey became deputy attorney general at the Department of Justice (DOJ). As second in command, he ran the day-to-day operations of the department. In 2005, he left DOJ to become general counsel and senior vice president at Lockheed Martin. Five years later, he joined Bridgewater Associates, a Connecticut-based investment fund, as its general counsel. Last year, he became the senior research scholar and Hertog Fellow on national security law at Columbia Law School.

“I have had the opportunity to work with Jim at the Department of Justice,” said Director Mueller. “He is a man of honesty, dedication, and integrity. These core values make him the right person for this job.”

Comey will periodically visit FBI Headquarters over the next few weeks to ensure a smooth and efficient transition on September 4, Director Mueller’s last day in office.

President Nominates James B. Comey As New FBI Director

The FBI web site reports on the nomination ceremony of James B. Comey as the new FBI director,

President Barack Obama today nominated James B. Comey, Jr. to serve as the next Director of the FBI. Comey must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before taking office.

“Jim is exceptionally qualified to handle the full range of challenges faced by today’s FBI,” the president said during a ceremony held at the White House. “I am confident that Jim will be a leader who understands how to keep America safe and to stay true to our founding ideals no matter what the future may bring.”  

"I want to commend the president for the choice of Jim Comey as the next director of the FBI,” said current Director Robert S. Mueller. “I have had the opportunity to work with Jim for a number of years at the Department of Justice, and I have found him to be a man of honesty, dedication, and integrity. His experience, his judgment, and his strong sense of duty will benefit not only the Bureau, but the country as a whole.”

Comey served as deputy attorney general under the George W. Bush administration from December 2003 until August 2005, running the day-to-day operations of the Department of Justice. Prior to that, he was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted a number of major terrorism and criminal cases. From 1996 to 2001, Comey worked in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. He has extensive industry experience as well, serving as general counsel and senior vice president for Lockheed Martin and general counsel for the investment firm Bridgewater Associates.

Attorney General Holder And FBI Director Mueller Were Mum On Petraeus For Weeks

Shaun Waterman and Kristina Wong at the Washington Times report on Congressional leaders who are asking questions about what the Obama administration knew about former CIA Director Petraeus's prior to the presidential election. 

Congressional leaders are calling on Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. (seen above in his official DOJ photo) and FBI  Director Robert S. Mueller III to explain why their agencies kept information about former CIA Director David H. Petraues extramarital affair from the White House, Congress and the U.S. intelligence community as the scandal expanded and ensnared the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan..

Lawmakers also said they intend to call on Mr. Petraeus to testify about the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya as soon as this week.

The Pentagon inspector general Tuesday opened an investigation of Marine Gen. John Allen after the FBI  found “inappropriate” emails among tens of thousands he had sent to a Florida socialite during a cybercrime probe that uncovered Mr. Petraeus affair and forced his resignation last week.

Mr. Holder knew that the FBI investigation had stumbled across evidence of Mr. Petraeus' affair weeks ago “but chose not to disclose it until after the presidential election — yet another example of Mr. Holder's politicized leadership of the Justice Department,” Rep. Frank R. Wolf, Virginia Republican, said in a letter Tuesday to House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican.
