‘Governing The Nation’ Exhibition Coming Soon To The National Constitution Center

Philly Daily, where my Crime Beat column appears each week, reports that the National Constitution Center announced the upcoming Governing the Nation exhibition, which brings the Constitution’s structure of government to life through immersive sets, historical artifacts, and interactive experiences.

“Opening to the public on Friday, May 15, Governing the Nation explores how power is divided among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, how each branch is empowered to check the others, and how authority is shared between the national government and the states,” the center explained. “Inside the gallery, visitors encounter these principles in action through both hands-on experiences and artifacts from defining moments in American history. Together, they illustrate how the Constitution has been interpreted, contested, and applied across American history.

National Constitution Center In Philadelphia Opens ‘America’s Founding’ Gallery

Philly Daily, where my Crime Beat column appears each week, reports that the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia announced the opening of its newest permanent gallery. America’s Founding.

“America’s Founding takes visitors on a journey from the colonies’ growing tensions with Great Britain through the drafting, ratification, and adoption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,” the National Constitution Center stated.

“The gallery will bring this pivotal era to life through rare artifacts, immersive environments, and digital interactives that reveal how the founding generation defined—and debated—the principles of liberty, equality, and government by consent”.

A Secretary At War: Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates Looks Back On the Wars In Iraq And Afghanistan, And the War On Terrorism

The Journal of Counterterrorism & Homeland Security International published my piece on former Defense Secretary Robert Gates speaking at the National Constitiution Center in Philadelphia.

Gates, the author of Duty: The Memoirs of a Secretary at War, began his book tour here and I covered the event as he spoke about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the war on terrorism.

World Premiere Of 'American Spirits: The Rise And Fall Of Prohibition' Exhibition At The National Constitution Center In Philadelphia

I attended the press preview and world premiere of the National Consititution Center's new exhibition, American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibtion, today.

Daniel Okrent, the author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition, was the main speaker at the press luncheon and his interesting and amusing presentation made me want to read his book, as well as see the exhibition after the luncheon.

 

We were also entertained by a 1920-style dance performance by dancers from the Society Hill Dance Academy and the luncheon was disrupted with a mock raid by mock Prohibition Enforcement Officers.    

Beyond evoking the glamor and excitement of jazz music, flappers, bootleggers and gangsters, as well as suffragists and temperance advocates, the prohibition era also makes one think about constitutional issues and the current prohibition of drugs.

I plan to write a future column about the prohibition exhibation and I'll post it here.

    

The exhibition runs from October 19, 2012 to April 28, 2013.
