Rob Baily-Millado at the New York Post offers a piece on the late actor Danny Aiello.
Danny Aiello didn’t launch his scene-stealing acting career until he was 40 — but he was born to do it.
“It must be something I was more or less destined to do,” the Bronx native told me in 2014 upon the publication of his autobiography. “The reason being, I didn’t voluntarily leave one life for another; it just so happened to be that way.”
The first-time author’s 320-page memoir dropped with
an epic title: “I
Only Know Who I Am When I Am Somebody Else: My Life on the Street, on the
Stage, and in the Movies.”
A whole lotta words for a lotta life.
Aiello’s life ended Thursday night at age 86
in New Jersey after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 64 years,
Sandy Cohen, with whom he had four children.
As the public mourns a beloved character actor, I
can’t help but remember that the Oscar nominee was so much more than Sal, the
pizzeria owner, in Spike Lee’s iconic “Do the Right Thing,” or Cher’s cuckolded
fiancé Johnny in “Moonstruck.”
