A Look Back At Bob Hope Singing The Original 'Silver Bells' In 'The Lemon Drop Kid' Film

I love Christmas songs, and I’ll continue to listen to them this holiday season until New Year’s Day. 

I love many of the classic Christmas songs, which have been covered by the great old singers, such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and others.    

Silver Bells is one of my favorite Christmas songs. Many of the famous crooners, like Dean Martin, have covered the song, but few remember that it was the late, great comedian Bob Hope who first sang the song in the 1951 film, The Lemon Drop Kid. 

While most people remember Bob Hope for his wonderful USO shows for the troops and his TV specials, he was also a talented comic actor, starring with Bing Crosby in the “Road” film series, and he stared in several films based on Damon Runyon’s short crime stories, such as The Lemon Drop Kid.

A Little Humor: Daddy Takes Daughter To The Zoo

Eight-year-old Mary rushed up to her father and asked him to take her to the zoo when he arrived for his weekend visitation. 

Her father, a notorious gambler and deadbeat dad, told his daughter that he didn’t like the zoo and he had other plans. 

“I’ve never been to the zoo,” Mary cried. “I want to see the animals.” 

His ex-wife, a stern woman, gave her ex-husband a dirty look. 

“Alright, I’ll take you to the zoo,” the father told his daughter. 

“Did you enjoy the zoo?” Mary’s mother asked her when she returned home. 

“It was great,” Mary said. “I loved seeing the animals.” 

“Did you and your father have a good time?” asked her mother. 

“Daddy did,” Mary replied. “Especially when one of the animals came in at 20 to 1!”

A Little Humor: Who Wins The Prize?

The father of seven children had won a prize at a raffle. 

He called his kids together and asks which one should have the prize.

“Who is the most obedient?” he asked. And the kids pointed to the oldest one.

“Who never talks back to mother?” The kids pointed to the middle child.

“And who does everything mother says?”

All seven children said, “Okay daddy! You get the prize.”

On This Day In History The Late Great Comedian Bob Hope Was Born

On this day in 1903 Bob Hope, the late great comedian, actor and USO troop entertainer, was born.

Thanks for the Memories: Bob Hope's Final Vietnam USO Christmas Show

Following up on my last post about Bob Hope's Vietnam USO Christmas shows, which can be read here, above is a photo of Bob Hope during his 1969 Christmas show aboard the USS Saratoga.

I submit once again that I believe Bob Hope was a great comedian, a great comic actor and a great American.

He is remembered fondly by the many thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that he entertained from World War II to Vietnam.

Remembering Bob Hope's Vietnam USO Christmas Shows

The Weider History Group's online publication, http://www.historynet.com/ has a good piece that fondly remembers comedian Bob Hope's Vietnam USO Christmas shows.

He entertained the troops in Vietnam from 1964 to 1972, continuing a tradition he began in World War II. Hope always brought beautiful women with him, including Raquel Welch (seen above in the photo with Hope).

Hope did not visit my carrier, the USS Kitty Hawk, during Christmas 1970, as we were too far north in the Gulf of Tonkin. I know that 5,500 sailors were sad about that.

Bob Hope was a great comedian, a great comic actor and a great American.
