We at CIA find the celebration of entities like WikiLeaks to be both perplexing and deeply troubling. Because while we do our best to quietly collect information on those who pose very real threats to our country, individuals such as Julian Assange and Edward Snowden seek to use that information to make a name for themselves. As long as they make a splash, they care nothing about the lives they put at risk or the damage they cause to national security.

WikiLeaks walks like a hostile intelligence service and talks like a hostile intelligence service. It has encouraged its followers to find jobs at CIA in order to obtain intelligence. It directed Chelsea Manning in her theft of specific secret information. And it overwhelmingly focuses on the United States, while seeking support from anti-democratic countries and organizations.

It is time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is – a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia. In January of this year, our Intelligence Community determined that Russian military intelligence—the GRU—had used WikiLeaks to release data of US victims that the GRU had obtained through cyber operations against the Democratic National Committee. And the report also found that Russia’s primary propaganda outlet, RT, has actively collaborated with WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks Takes Another Shot At America

The New York Post Editorial Board offers a piece on the WikiLeaks release of a trove of classified CIA information.

WikiLeaks and Julian Assange (seen in the above photo) claim they act for the public good, but their release of CIA documents proves yet again that they lack a moral compass.

The group posted a massive cache of stolen CIA documents online Tuesday, revealing agency cyber-tools for hacking smartphones, Samsung TVs, computer-operating systems, even vehicle-control systems in new cars and trucks. Officials say the info looks like the real thing.

There’s no question the document dump — apparently the largest leak in CIA history — will harm US efforts to collect vital information needed to keep the nation safe.

“This essentially gives our enemies a playbook on how we go about our clandestine cyber operations,” one ex-CIA agent said. Plus, the agency must now assess whether its tools still work and, if not, come up with new ones. That’ll cost a mint.

An even higher priority is figuring out how the agency lost the material. WikiLeaks says it came from a “high-security network” at the CIA and was given to the group by an ex-government hacker or contractor. But who knows? Maybe the agency itself was hacked.

There are positives here, too. It’s reassuring to know, for instance, that the agency has such “wonderful” tools at its disposal, as ex-CIA director Michael Hayden put it.

“There are some bad people in the world who have Samsung TVs,” he said. “You want us to have the ability to actually turn on that listening device inside the TV to learn that person’s intentions.” Kudos to the cyber-spooks who put their remarkable talents to use to develop these tools.

Ralph Peters: Why Trump Is Wrong to Target The U.S. Intelligence Community

Ralph Peters (seen in the above photo), a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and intelligence officer, offers his view of the U.S. intelligence community in his column at the New York Post.

Thursday’s Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on cyber-warfare threats — particularly those from Russia — was a welcome moment for grown-ups. Frank, honest and bipartisan, the consensus from our legislators and our intelligence-community leadership was that we face multiple grave and growing dangers, but the most-immediate and only existential threat comes from Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

And yes, the Russians did attack our elections with cyber-weapons and information warfare. All our intelligence agencies agree. Which is rare.

Republican or Democrat, the senators praised the patriotism and accomplishments of those who serve in our intelligence agencies. That was welcome, too, given the political fashion of the moment to denigrate our intelligence professionals while turning backflips to excuse Putin’s strategic subversion and condone the actions of an America-hating alleged rapist, Julian Assange.

Julian Assange Is Still A Creep

Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, believes that Julian Assange is still a creep, despite his WikiLeaks broadsides against Hillary Clinton

If Julian Assange plays this right, he just might score an invitation to CPAC next year. 

The notorious WikiLeaks founder would have to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference remotely because he is still holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, avoiding a rape investigation in Sweden and fearing extradition to the United States for his malicious exposure of state secrets. 

But, surely, the details could be worked out.Assange is now treated as a respectable figure by some elements of the right because he detests Hillary Clinton and promises to torpedo her campaign with new email exposures. Never mind that he has done everything within his power to damage the interests of the United States, in league with his quasi-ally, Vladimir Putin’s Russia. 

Rarely has “strange new respect” been stranger. It’s like conservatives embracing Kim Philby, the infamous British double agent who defected to the Soviet Union in the 1960s, if he promised to produce damaging information about LBJ before the 1964 election. Or welcoming Philip Agee, the anti-CIA activist from the 1970s who was allied with Russian and Cuban intelligence, if he demonstrated enough hostility to Jimmy Carter. 

The enemy of my enemy (or more properly, my domestic political opponent) can still be a reprehensible creep, and that’s what Assange is.
