Washington Times: Defund Police Cries Defy The Public's Trust, Support Of Police

David Sherfinski and S.A. Miller at the Washington Times offers a piece on a study that shows most people trust and support the police.

Calls to defund the police because of brutality and racism don’t match the experiences of most Americans when they call law enforcement for help, according to the most recent comprehensive national data collected by the Justice Department.

The overwhelming share of U.S. residents who in the past several years initiated contact with the police to request assistance said they were satisfied with the interaction, and a clear majority said the police improved the situation.

Among the millions of people who call police for help, whether for a mental health crisis, domestic violence incident or other emergency, an estimated 83% said they were satisfied with the police response and 59% said the police improved the situation, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Police-Public Contact Survey.

Facebook Page Of Gunman James Hodgkinson Filled With Anti-Trump Rants

Andrea Noble and S.A. Miller at the Washington Times offer a piece on the gunman who opened fire on Congressmen in Alexandria, Virginia.

The gunman killed after opening fire on a congressional GOP baseball team practicing in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday was the same man who approached the baseball field earlier to ask whether the players were Republicans or Democrats, according to a congressman.

Rep. Jeff Duncan said James T. Hodgkinson — the 66-year-old Illinois man identified as the gunman — had approached and asked him about the party affiliation of the players as he and fellow Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis left the practice just prior to the shooting.

President Trump broke the news Mr. Hodgkinson had died from his injuries as he spoke from the White House on Wednesday morning.

Details about the suspected gunman were just beginning to emerge Wednesday, as the FBI and law enforcement officials conducted a search of his home in the St. Louis suburbs of Belleville, Illinois. More than a decade ago, Mr. Hodgkinson was arrested for domestic assault but more recently was the subject of a complaint about gunfire outside his rural Illinois home.

It was unclear what motivated Wednesday’s attack, which witnesses described as a minutes-long gun battle between the shooter and Capitol Police and Alexandria police officers. The shooting occurred as Republicans practiced for an annual charity baseball game scheduled for Thursday, and sent members of Congress, staffers and even children hiding in a dugout or running from the baseball field. Five people, including Rep. Steve Scalise, two officers, a congressional aide, and a former staffer were injured.

A Facebook page believed to belong to Mr. Hodgkinson included criticism of Mr. Trump, calling him “a traitor” who “destroyed our Democracy.”

President Trump: Drive Them Out!: Trump Urges Muslim Leaders To Cut Off Islamic Terrorism At The Root In Their Own Countries

S.A. Miller at the Washington Times offers a piece on President Trump speech to Muslim leaders.

President Trump called on Muslim leaders Sunday to begin stamping out radial Islamic terrorism within their own countries, giving a blunt assessment to the poisonous ideology within their religion and offering a path forward to peace.

In a historic speech to leaders from 50 Muslim countries, Mr. Trump described the struggle against Islamic extremists as a “battle between good and evil.”

“There can be no coexistence with this violence. There can be no tolerating it. No accepting it. No excusing it and no ignoring it,” he said in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. “They don’t worship God. They worship death.”

He offered a partnership with the U.S. to defeat terrorist groups such as the Islamic State, but he said they must take the lead to end the bloodshed and violence it is spreading in their own homelands.

The president also called for a unified front to combat Iran, which supplies weapons and training to terrorists and spreads destruction and chaos across the region.

Former CIA Terror Fighter Warns That Americans "Will Die" Because Of Open Border

S.A. Miller at the Washington Times offers a piece on former CIA officer Michael F. Scheuer's view of the lack of security on the Mexican border.

Michael F. Scheuer, former head of the CIA’s Osama Bin Laden unit, said Thursday that the best way to protect Americans form terrorists is to secure the border.

“What we could have done after 9-11 if we really wanted to improve U.S. security … was to close the southern border and perhaps even spots on the northern border with Canada,” Mr. Scheuer said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.”

“At least you secure the continent in that way. Right now we’re exposed, not only internationally, but we don’t know who is in our country,” he said. “It seems to me that [it is] a simple conclusion of logic: Close the border, protect America.”

Officers And Senior Enlisted Should Carry Guns At Fort Hood, Says House Homeland Security Chief

S.A. Miller at the New York Post offers a piece on the reaction to the Fort Hood shooting.

WASHINGTON – The murderous Fort Hood shooting spree last week could have been prevented if military leaders were allowed to carry firearms on base, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul said Sunday.

McCaul (R-Texas) called it a “common sense idea” to allow officers and senior enlisted men to “at least carry a weapon on the base.”

“That would be a deterrent, No. 1 — and No. 2, a way to have a quick response to any shooter that comes on these bases,” McCaul said on “Fox News Sunday.”
