Investigation Continues On Fort Hood Shooter

Yesterday Jim Garamone at the American Forces Press Service offered the below piece on the Fort Hood shooting by U.S. soldier Ivan Lopez (seen in the above photo):

WASHINGTON, April 2, 2014 – A soldier killed three fellow soldiers and wounded 16 more before killing himself at Fort Hood, Texas, officials said tonight.

There is no evidence that the incident is related to terrorism, said Army Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley, the commander of 3rd Corps and Fort Hood.

“We are not ruling anything out, and the investigation continues,” the general said during a late-night news conference. “Our focus now is to focus on the families of the injured, and focus on the families of the killed [to] ensure they have the best care and counseling available.”

The soldier used a recently purchased .45-caliber pistol and first fired on personnel in the 1st Medical Brigade at about 4 p.m. CDT before moving on to the 49th Transportation Battalion.

A military policewoman confronted him in a parking lot, where he drew his pistol and killed himself. Milley called the MP’s actions heroic.

The soldier – whose name is withheld until his next of kin are notified – had some behavioral health and mental health issues and was being evaluated for post-traumatic stress, Milley said. “When we have these kinds of tragedies on our bases, something is not working,”

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said during a news conference in Hawaii, where he has been attending a conference of Pacific-nation defense ministers and visiting U.S. forces.  In a written statement issued by the Pentagon, Hagel stressed that nothing is more important to the department than the safety and well-being of service members and their families. “I am grateful to all the first responders who rushed to the scene,” he said. “We will closely monitor the situation at Fort Hood and stay informed by what investigators and law enforcement personnel learn about the shooting.”

President Barack Obama also is following the situation closely. In an appearance in Chicago, the president said DOD, federal and state officials will work together to find out what happened and why. Obama said the shooting reopens the pain of the shootings at Fort Hood five years ago. “We know these families,” he said. “We know their incredible service to our country and the sacrifices that they make. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community.”

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the thoughts and prayers of the greater military community are with those at Fort Hood. “Many questions remain, and our focus is on supporting the victims and their families,” Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey said in a statement released at the Pentagon. “This is a community that has faced and overcome crises with resilience and strength.”Personnel on the base were ordered to shelter in place, and the order was lifted about 10 p.m. EDT.

Fort Hood Shooter Suffered From "Mental Health Issues," Says General

FoxNews.com reports on the tragic shooting at Fort Hood.

A soldier suffering from "mental health issues" opened fire at Fort Hood Wednesday, killing three soldiers and injuring 16 before killing himself, a post Army general said.

Army Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, the senior officer at the facility, also said at an evening news conference that there was no indication of terrorism, but added "we're not ruling anything out."

He said the shooter, identified earlier as Spc. Ivan Lopez, was armed with a .45 caliber Smith & Wesson and killed himself when confronted by military police in a parking lot.
Milley said he did not know any motive for the incident, but the shooter, who had served four months in combat in Iraq in 2011, had "behavioral and mental health issues" and was being treated for those.

Peace, Patriotism, And Pollard

Tom Rogan at National Review Online offers a piece on the possible release of traitor and convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Along with Ames and Hanssen, Jonathan Pollard is in his own very special category of treason.

Having sworn an oath to the United States, Pollard betrayed that trust with energetic glee. In return, Israel ensured that the American intelligence officer was handsomely rewarded for his crimes. Pollard’s efforts continued without hesitation, until the day he was finally caught, in 1985.

Since then, pursuing Pollard’s release from prison has been a unifying cause for Israeli society. In tune with public sentiment, successive Israeli governments have spent many years petitioning successive American presidents to “do the right thing.” Those presidents have always said no. But now, it seems, that might change.

Yesterday, reports surfaced that suggest President Obama is considering releasing Pollard in exchange for Israeli concessions to the Palestinians. That must not happen.

Shakespearean Brawl At New Jersey Restaurant

Frank Kimmer at Philly.com reports on a family feud at a restaurant in Egg Harbor, New Jersey that was simply Shakespearean.

A quarrel between ex-lovers became a Shakespearean-style brawl at a TGIF Fridays in South Jersey, according to police.

And, yes, one of the families bore the name Montague.

FBI, Military Hunt Ex-Army Recruit Suspected Of Plotting 'Fort Hood-Inspired Jihad"

Jana Winter at FoxNews.com offers a piece on the FBI and military's hunt for a suspected terrorist plotting a Fort Hood-type attack.

The FBI is searching for a recent Army recruit believed to be planning a "Fort Hood-inspired jihad against U.S. soldiers," FoxNews.com has learned.

The alert, whose legitimacy was confirmed by military and law enforcement officials, stated that a man identified as Booker had told friends of his "intention to commit jihad." Booker, who is also known as Muhammad Abdullah Hassan, was recruited by the U.S. Army in Kansas City, Mo., in February 2014 and was scheduled to report for basic training on April 7. But he was discharged last week, apparently after law enforcement authorities learned of his alleged plan.

The alert, a copy of which was obtained by FoxNews.com, was sent out by the FBI's Kansas City Division on Friday and distributed through the U.S. Marine Corps. The portion obtained by FoxNews.com did not include Hassan's photo or age. It was also sent to the Kansas City Police Department, which could indicate authorities believe he may have remained in the area where he was recruited.

Don't Do It, Mr. President: My Philadelphia Inquirer Piece on Not Pardoning Convicted Spy Jonathan Pollard

In my last post, in light of a rumor that Secretary of State Kerry is making a deal to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard to the Israelis in exchange for their release of Palestinian prisoners, I offered a look back at the Pollard spy case with a link to my interview with Ronald J. Olive, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) special agent who investigated, arrested and interrogated Pollard - http://www.pauldavisoncrime.com/2014/04/a-look-back-at-jonathan-pollard-spy-case.html.

The negotiated release of Pollard, a former Navy analyst who spied for the Israelis, has come up before. When President Clinton was thinking of releasing Pollard in 1999, CIA Director George Tenet threatened to resign if Pollard was released. The threat killed the deal.

When rumors of Pollard's negotiated release floated in 1999, I wrote a piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer stating that it was a bad idea.

You can read the piece via the piece via the below link:

It is still a bad idea.

Note: The above U.S. Navy photos show Pollard at his desk, gathering material to sell to the Israelis.

A Look Back At The Jonathan Pollard Spy Case

With a rumor floating in news circles that Secretary of State Kerry is offering to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard to the Israelis in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners - a truly bad idea in my view - I thought to offer a look back at Pollard's espionage case.

A while back I interviewed Ronald J. Olive, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service special agent who investigated, arrested and interrogated Pollard, for Counterterrorism magazine.
