How The Terrorist Carlos The Jackal Was Feted And Pampered By The Communist East German Stasi

Allan Hall at the Daily Mail offers a piece on how the notorious Communist East German Stasi supported the terrorist and murderer known as Carlos the Jackal.

Shredded Stasi files have been pieced together to reveal how global terrorist Carlos the Jackal was supplied with weapons and given sanctuary by the East German secret police.

While the West was hunting the man responsible for atrocities all over the world, the Communist regime in Berlin was busy handing him the means to carry out more.

But not only did the Stasi offer him sanctuary and supplies, it ensured the killer was feted and indulged like a dignitary from the Soviet Kremlin.

Carlos the Jackal : French Hand Imprisoned Terrorist And Murderer Third Life Sentence

The BBC reports that the imprisoned terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal (so named because the French police found a copy of Frederick Forsyth’s classic thriller Day of the Jackal in his abandoned apartment) was again sentenced to life in prison

Carlos the Jackal, a notorious Venezuelan militant serving two life sentences, has been handed a third by a French court.

The self-styled revolutionary, whose real name is Iliac Ramirez Sanchez and is now 67, was convicted of a 1974 grenade attack on a Paris shop.

Ramirez threw a grenade into the shopping area, killing two and injuring 34 others, the court found.

He denied the charges and called the trial, 43 years later, "absurd".

Born into a wealthy Venezuelan family, Ramirez studied in Moscow before joining a militant group, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He converted to Islam in 1975.

When his latest trial began in early March, he said that any killings he had committed had been carried out in the name of "the revolution" and condemned "scavenging" lawyers and "Zionist interests".

Carlos The Jackal Faces New Paris Trial

The British newspaper the Guardian reports that the international terrorist and convicted murderer known as Carlos the Jackal will stand trial again in Paris, France.

Already in a French prison for life for the murder of two policemen and an informant, this trial will determine Carlos' role in four bombings that killed 11 people.

He was the son of a millionaire lawyer who became one of the world's most wanted men: a globe-trotting criminal mastermind and self-styled professional revolutionary said to have been responsible for bombings, hijackings and shootings across the world. They called him Carlos the Jackal.

Now, some three decades after he spread terror across the globe, the Jackal, whose real name is Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, is set to face trial in Paris in a case that could decide whether he ever steps outside a prison again.

The British newspaper The Independent reports that 15, 500 bags of shredded or torn documents have been pieced together to reveal the level of support the Stasi afforded Carlos when they sheltered him in East Germany.

According the British newspaper The Independent, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, aka Carlos the Jackal, is not happy with Olivier Assayas' film bio of his life of crime and terrorism.

The egotistical terrorist (seen in the below photo), currently in a French prison for murdering two French policemen and a police informant, should be pleased that Edgar Ramirez (seen in the above photo), the actor portraying him in the film, is far better looking than him.

Interview With Olivier Assavas, The Writer and Director of Carlos

I watched Carlos tonight on Comcast's On Demand channel.

I thought the film was outstanding. Although the film billed itself as a fictional account of the pre-9/11 terrorist Ilich Ramierz Sanchez, aka Carlos, the film was historically accurate.

Thankfully, the film did not, like Che, glorify a murderer and terrorist. The film's gritty realism reminded me of The Baader Meinhof Complex, another fine film about terrorism.

The Scottish newspaper The Scotsman offered an interview with the film's writer and director, Olivier Assavas.

You're a Terrorist, a Murderer, in Prison for Life, Called a Jackal, and You're Concerned About Your Image Now?

I read an interesting piece in the Washington Post about how Ilich Ramirez is suing a documentary film company over the “intellectual property” rights to his name and “biographical image.”

Ramirez, better known as “Carlos the Jackal,” is a former terrorist and murderer who is currently serving a life sentence in Paris, France for killing two French security agents.

Ramirez was, and apparently remains, an egomaniac. He was a rich, spoiled child who played at being a terrorist. He enjoyed being in the international spotlight in the 1970s and he didn’t mind having to bomb, shoot and kill people to be there.

Although he committed some truly awful criminal acts, this vicious coward was hardly “the most dangerous man in the world,” as some journalists, novelists and film makers made him out to be. He loved and encouraged the over-blown publicity, even adopting the name “Carlos the jackal,” which a reporter called him after finding a copy of Frederick Forsyth’s first-class thriller The Day of the Jackal in his abandoned belongings.

Forsyth’s character was a shadowy, highly efficient, professional assassin. Ramirez was none of these things. Perhaps Frederick Forsyth should sue Ramirez.
