My Washington Times Review Of 'The Operator: Firing The Shots That Killed Osama Bin Laden And My Years As A SEAL Team Warrior'

The Washington Times published my review of Robert O’Neill’s The Operator.

On May 2, 2011, Osama bin Laden, founder and leader of the terrorist organization al Qaeda, the man responsible for the horrific Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, and the most wanted terrorist in the world, was shot dead by American special operators during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The story leaked quickly that U.S. Navy SEALs from the superelite group known to the public as SEAL Team Six were the operators who took down bin Laden and captured a treasury of intelligence about al Qaeda as well.

In 2012 Matt Bissonnette, author of “No Easy Day: The Autobiography of a Navy SEAL,” claimed that he was the operator who shot and killed bin Laden. Sources in the SEAL community, some of whom were outraged at Mr. Bissonnette’s breach of security, claimed that the “point man,” who has not come forward, was the actual shooter. In 2014 former Navy SEAL Senior Chief Petty Officer Robert O’Neill came out and announced that he was, in fact, the special operator who killed bin Laden.

Now Robert O’Neill has written “The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior.”

In “The Operator” Mr. O’Neill not only tells of the Abbottabad raid and his shots that killed the evil mastermind bin Laden, he also recounts his involvement in the operation to rescue fellow SEAL Marcus Luttrell of “Lone Survivor” fame in Afghanistan, as well as his involvement in the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips, who was abducted by Somali pirates. The book also chronicles lesser known, but equally interesting military operations.

Mr. O’Neill’s book also tells of his Butte, Montana boyhood and how he came to join the Navy in 1995 and became a SEAL in 1996. He describes in harrowing detail (and abundant humor) his SEAL training and how he went on to join the SEALs’ most elite unit.

… I contacted Robert O’Neill and asked him why he wrote the book. He said the book was an American piece about a kid from Montana who didn’t know how to swim but became a Navy SEAL, rose to become a member of the SEAL’s most elite team and then found himself on some of the most historic missions in recent history, including the raid on bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.

“The story and my name had been out there for a few years and there have been movies and books made from the story,” Mr. O’Neill told me. “I wanted to tell a different part of it — my part.”

More Brian Williams Bull?: Former Navy SEAL Doubts Brian Williams Flew With SEAL Team Six

Did Brian Williams tell even more fabricated war stories?

Bruce Golding at the New York Post reports on Brian Williams' SEAL Team Six stories.

A former Navy SEAL is publicly questioning claims by disgraced NBC anchor Brian Williams that he flew with members of the famed SEAL Team Six during the Iraq War — and that one of them sent him a souvenir from the daring commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

“My initial reaction is it sounds completely preposterous. There’s a healthy dislike towards embedded journalists within the SEAL community,” ex-SEAL sniper and best-selling author Brandon Webb told The Huffington Post.

“I can’t even remember an embed with a SEAL unit. And especially at SEAL Team Six? Those guys don’t take journalists with them on missions.”

Webb, who helped train the late “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, also doubted that Williams — currently suspended for lying about his experiences covering the Iraq War — was actually given a piece of a high-tech chopper used to infiltrate bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan in 2011.

Navy SEAL Who Shot And Killed Bin Laden Speaks Out

The British newspaper the Daily Mail offers a report on the interview of the U.S. Navy SEAL who shot and killed Public Enemy Number 1, Osama bin Laden.

The Navy SEAL who claims he shot and killed Osama bin Laden in the famous raid which captured America's most wanted terrorist has spoken for the first time about the moment he shot bin Laden three times in the head and watched him take his last breath.

The Team Sox member - who is referred to as 'The Shooter' for the safety of his family - described in unforgettable detail the days leading up to the kill, the moment he shot bin Laden three times and the fallout from the raid.

Once they given their mission, the woman at the CIA - made famous by Jessica Chastain's portrayal in Zero Dark Thirty - told the team bin Laden was '100 per cent on the third floor' of his compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan.

In an interview to appear in the March edition of Esquire magazine, The Shooter describes for the first time in unforgettable detail the tense and life-changing two minutes that changed the course of history.

"'I can't tell you 100 per cent, but he was standing and moving. He was holding (his wife Amal) in front of him. Maybe as a shield, I don't know. For me, it was snapshot of a target ID, definitely him.

"This was repetition and muscle memory. That's him, boom, done."

Is Benghazi This President's Mogadishu? Former Navy SEAL Says 'It Looks Like Hillary Clinton Took A Page Out Of Her Husband's Playbook'

Howard E. Wasdin, a former member of SEAL Team Six and the author of SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy Seal Sniper, appeared on Fox News and took President Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton to task for failing to support the Americans in Benghazi.

Eighteen Americans were killed in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. The two-day firefight during which a group of soldiers tried to rescue their fallen comrades inspired the film ‘Black Hawk Down.’

According to critics, the Clinton White House failed to provide our men with the resources needed to complete the mission. Some are drawing comparisons between the tragedy and the events surrounding the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

Howard Wasdin, who survived the battle at Mogadishu and went on to write “SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper,” joined Fox and Friends this morning.

Wasdin discussed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s handling of the Benghazi attack, saying it “looks like she took a play or a page out of her husband’s playbook, which is not to give what’s asked for.”

He continued, “In Mogadishu […] we asked for armor, but weren’t given the armor. I lost friends in that battle. Now the SEALs in Benghazi, I think it’s well-documented now, that there was a desperate cry for help going out that wasn’t heeded.”
