Photo Of Aircraft Carrier USS Carl Vinson Sailing Out Of San Diego For WESTPAC

The U.S. Navy released a photo of sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) manning the rails as the ship departs its homeport of San Diego.

Carl Vinson departed San Diego for a regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific, in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.

The above photo was taken by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Omar A. Dominquez.

Note: The photo brings back memories from 1970, when I too manned the rails as we departed San Diego on board an aircraft carrier, the USS Kitty Hawk, headed for the Western Pacific, or WESTPAC, as we called it.

Been There, Done That: Sailors Manning The Rails As Aircraft Carrier Returns To San Diego Homeport

The U.S. Navy released the above photo of sailors manming the rails of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as it returns to its homeport at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif.

The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group successfully completed a five-month deployment to the western Pacific.

I recall manning the rails as a young sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk as we returned to San Diego from a WESTPAC deployment in 1971.

Cool Navy Photo: Aircraft Carrier USS Carl Vinson Getting Underway from North Island, San Diego

The above U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Lowell Whitman shows the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) getting underway from Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California to conduct sea trials on Feb.1, 2013.

The photo brings back memories to me as I served on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CVA 63) during the Vietnam War in 1970-1971 and the Kitty Hawk got underway from this very point back in those days.

I have fond memories of the Kitty Hawk, North Island and the City of San Diego.

Paul Davis is a writer who covers crime. He served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War and he later served two years aboard the Navy harbor tugboat U.S.S. Saugus at the U.S. floating nuclear submarine base at Holy Loch, Scotland.
