Howie Carr: Whitey Bulger's Death Leaves Legacy Of Destruction, Questions About Missing Millions

Howie Carr, (seen in the below photo) Boston Herald columnist and author Ratman: The Trial and Conviction of Whitey Bulger, offers a column on the death of Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger.

Two final questions remain: Where are Whitey’s millions, his ill-gotten gains in cocaine cash?
And who’s got it, or is planning to get it?

The monster was murdered at a federal pen in West Virginia yesterday at age 89 —  better late than never, I guess.

Was he murdered by a hit squad —  from the Mafia, maybe, or perhaps even the Deep State? Whitey knew where a lot of bodies were buried —  figuratively as well as literally. Those were the rumors anyway yesterday.

“It’s perfect karma,” said Johnny Martorano, the co-founder of the Winter Hill Gang. “He ratted all these guys into prison, and that’s where he gets it in the end. Karma. Everybody I know is celebrating tonight.”

That would include me, by the way. I understand that you’re not supposed to speak ill of the dead. But there’s another old saying I remember, from Winston Churchill: There is nothing so exhilarating as being shot at without effect.

But you know what comes close to that kind of exhilaration? Having a guy put out a murder contract on you and then he’s the one who gets murdered.

Like Martorano said, it’s perfect karma.

'Cadillac Frank' Salemme, New England Cosa Nostra Boss, Found Guilty Of Slaying Of Club Owner

The Boston Herald reports that the New England Cosa Nostra boss was found guilty of murder.

Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme, the 84-year-old gangster who steered the New England Mafia with an iron fist, was convicted of murdering real estate developer Steven DiSarro before driving his corpse to Providence 25 years ago.

Codefendant and mob associate Paul Weadick, 63, a Burlington plumber, was convicted of the same charge: murder of a federal witness.

A federal jury comprised of eight women and four men returned the verdicts yesterday.

Howie Carr: One Last Close-Up For The 'Rifleman'

Howie Carr (seen in the below photo) in his Boston Herald column offers his take on convicted murderer Steve Flemmi (seen in the above photo), Whitey Bulger’s former partner-in-crime, as the elderly mobster testifies against New England Cosa Nostra boss, Frank "Cadillac" Salemme.

Mr. Flemmi, are you ready for your close-up?

You’d better be, Stevie, because there won’t be any retakes this time — this is the last waltz for you, as you take the witness stand this morning in the trial of your old pal Cadillac Frank Salemme.

After your star turn this week in Courtroom 17, it’s back to wherever the Bureau of Prisons cages its prized rats (unlike other inmates, they’re not even listed on the BOP website). You won’t be going anywhere for the rest of your natural life — which, given how long your parents lived, is probably at least another decade.

Do you think Stevie is feeling a pang or two of nostalgia this morning? I mean, he’s been informing on Salemme since 1965. That’s 53 years, 24 of which Flemmi has spent behind bars, compared to, by my calculations, approximately 25 for Salemme.

The moral of the story is, crime doesn’t pay, unless you’re a Clinton.

Bada Bing: Goodfellas Staging Shakespeare

James Verniere at the Boston Herald offers a good piece on Friends and Romans, a film that I look forward to seeing.

Friends, Romans and fellow fans of “The Sopranos” will get a kick out of “Friends and Romans,” a Staten-Island-neighborhood-set low-budget but winning and very well-cast comedy about a group of Italian-Americans who have worked as extras for many years and get a chance to mount a production of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” at a local theater.
Their leader is hard-working family man Nick DeMaio (film, TV and “Sopranos” veteran Mike Rispoli). Nick is a seasoned extra, who has been repeatedly cast as “Gangster Number 3” in films and dreams of having lines to speak in front of a genuine audience. The screenplay, co-written by Rispoli, producer Gregg Greenberg and director Christopher Kublan (“Giving It Up”), was obviously penned by people fond of showbiz spoofs and of actors.
Nick and his fellow frustrated, extra buddies Dennis Socio (TV veteran Paul Ben-Victor), Joey “Bananas” Bongano (“Sopranos” veteran Anthony DeSando), Bobby Musso (the one and only Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri, aka Tony Sirico) and Frankie Fusso (Tony Darrow, “The Sopranos”) are hardly Shakespeare-ready. But they are game and they have a dream.

Howie Carr: Whitey Bulger Wanted Me Dead

Howie Carr, a Boston Herald columnist, broadcaster and author of the crime novel Killers, offers a piece at the Daily Beast on why Boston mob boss wanted Whitey Bulger wanted him dead.

BOSTON – Did Kevin Weeks and his gangland boss Whitey Bulger want to murder me? Undoubtedly.
Did they ever concoct an actual scheme to accomplish their goal, either by blowing me up with military-grade explosives or by shooting me from a cemetery across the street from my home?
I’m not so sure about that.
I can’t say that I’m displeased that Weeks has put me back in the news, especially with the new Bulger biopic Black Mass opening wide. Weeks’ story about the 40 pounds of C-4 explosives that the gang obtained from corrupt FBI agents is great publicity for my new novel about the Boston underworld, Killers, which is available on Amazon and everywhere else.
Every knock a boost, as they say. There are worse things than being called a “vicious bastard” by a vicious bastard. I think I’ll use it as a blurb for the paperback edition.
Of course Weeks and Whitey knew where I lived—I was a neighbor of one of Weeks’ brothers. And Whitey did hate me. I had committed an offense he considered punishable by death. I had embarrassed his younger brother, the state Senate president, William M. Bulger. And I had done so in the worst possible way, by repeatedly linking the imperious pol to his serial-killing, cocaine-dealing gangster sibling.

Former FBI Agent Zip Connelly Always Wanted To Have A Movie Made About Himself, But 'Black Mass' Is About The Mobster And Serial Killer Who Owned Him

Veteran journalist and author Howie Carr offers a column in the Boston Herald about former FBI agent 'Zip' Connelly and Boston mobster 'Whitey' Bulger.

Zip Connolly always dreamed of watching a Hollywood movie about himself, and now his wish is about to come true.
Alas, this screen gem is not about the heroism of the “decorated hero fed,” as the bent cop always so modestly described himself. It’s about the serial killer who owned him — Whitey Bulger. Tough break for Zip, who in his prime made a training video advising young G-men in training at Quantico, “Never try to out-gangster a gangster.”
Now, in his dotage, doing life in the Florida Panhandle for one of
Whitey’s contract hits, Zip tries to out-lawyer the lawyers.
And the hero G-man is having every bit as much success in his later endeavor as he did in
the former.
“Black Mass” screens nationwide next month. Think of this as Zip’s part in the prerelease publicity campaign. Johnny Depp, in the role of Zip’s paymaster, won’t be available for interviews until the actual premiere. In the meantime, Connolly garners a few headlines for the biopic about his capo di tutti capi.

Former FBI Agent Charged With Perjury In Whitey Bulger Trial

I've covered the FBI for a good number of years. I've interviewed senior FBI officials at FBI headquarters in Washington and at Philadelphia's FBI offices. I also interviewed former FBI counterintelligence official and President Reagan advisor David G. Major, and legendary FBI Special Agent Joseph "Donnie Brasco" Pistone, who spent six years undercover with the Bonanno Cosa Nostra crime family in New York.

I have a good deal of respect for the hard working and dedicated FBI agents who fight crime, espionage and terrorism around the globe. But the Whitey Bulger case was clearly not the FBI's finest hour.

Now former FBI agent Robert Fitzpatrick has given the FBI another black eye resulting from the Whitey Bulger saga.

I picked up a copy of Fitzpatrick's book, Betrayal: Whitey Bulger and the FBI Agent Who Fought to Bring Him Down, at a dollar store last year. I read the book and wondered about his claims.

Fitzpatrick repeated many of these claims during the trial of Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger. Now the feds are charging Fitzpatrick with perjury.

Laurel J. Sweet at the Boston Herald offers a piece on the perjury charge.

Federal prosecutors who delivered a blistering attack on a former FBI Boston supervisory agent when he took the stand for the defense in the mob trial of James “Whitey” Bulger two years ago circled back yesterday and charged him with lying under oath.

Retired G-man and crime author Robert J. Fitzpatrick, 75, of Charlestown, R.I., with his wife, Jane, at his side, declined comment late yesterday as he walked out of U.S. District Court in South Boston after pleading not guilty to 12 counts of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with his testimony July 29 and 30, 2013, as a defense witness for aging gangland murderer Bulger.

“Sir, it’s fair to say, isn’t it, you’re a man who likes to make up stories?” then-federal prosecutor Brian Kelly asked Fitzpatrick at the start of his cross-examination in 2013.

In his 23-page indictment, unsealed yesterday, the feds allege that Fitzpatrick, once the FBI’s second in command in Boston, “falsely held himself out as a whistleblower” and lied on the stand to “enhance his own credibility as a former FBI official.”

Johnny Depp Talks "Whitey"

Stephen Schaefer at the Boston Herald offers a piece on actor Johnny Depp portraying Boston mobster and murderer James "Whitey" Bulger in an upcoming film.

LOS ANGELES - Johnny Depp tackles one of the most challenging roles of his storied career next month in Boston when he begins filming "Black Mass" where he plays convicted mobster Whitey Bulger.

“I don’t think of him as Whitey – it’s James ‘Whitey’ Bulger,” Depp said at the Four Seasons Hotel yesterday during a press day for his science fiction thriller “Transcendence” which opens April 18.
While Depp, 50, played an undercover FBI agent getting the goods on a mobster in the 1997 true crime classic “Donnie Brasco,” Bulger is definitely a shift to the dark side.

“The reason to play it is obvious to me,” said the three-time Oscar nominee.  “He’s a fascinating character. I don’t think it’s like anything I’ve done before and I’m very excited to slide into that skin for a little bit.”

“Black Mass,” directed by “Out of the Furnace” writer-director Scott Cooper, is based on the 2001 New York Times bestseller “Black Mass: The True Story of the Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob” by Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill.

One Good "Turn": AMC's Revolutionary War Spy Drama Begins Tonight

Mark Perigard at the Boston Herald offers a review of AMC's Revolutionary War spy drama Turn.

The spy business hasn’t changed much in the last 240 years.

Sure, the tools have changed, but as AMC’s new drama “Turn” demonstrates, people fall into the profession for all sorts of reasons — ideology sometimes the least important.

The series is based on “Washington’s Spies,” by Alexander Rose, the true story of the Culper Ring, childhood friends who became espionage agents against the British forces occupying New York during the Revolutionary War.

In the extended 90-minute premiere, it’s 1776, and Abraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell, “Billy Elliot,” “Nymph()maniac Volume II”) is a Long Island cabbage farmer whose dreams pretty much extend to seeing his infant son take his first steps.

Politics don’t interest him, and he looks the other way at the British forces controlling the community, even the one soldier billeted in his own home. It’s the price of living these days.

But Abraham discovers that you can’t just sit on the sidelines when revolution comes to your doorstep — or takes over your favorite watering hole.

Boston Gangster Whitey Bulger Sentenced To 2 Consecutive Life Terms, Plus 5

Laurel J. Sweet has been covering the James "Whitey" Bulger trial for the Boston Herald.

Southie mobster James "Whitey" Bulger was sentenced today to two consecutive life terms -- plus five years -- after a federal judge ripped into the aging gangster for his "unfathomable" crimes all for the love of blood money.

Bulger, 84, who remained quiet again refusing to address the court or family members of his victims, was also ordered to pay $19,510,276 and 43 cents in restitution to the families. There was no reaction inside the court from families when the sentence was handed down.

U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper took last night to sleep on her decision and what she heard yesterday from 12 sons, daughters, widows and siblings whose impact statements spoke of despair, family suicides, lost loves and even the triumph of moving on.

Today, she is not holding back: "It is hard to know where to begin," Casper said. "The scope, the callousness, the depravity of your crimes is almost unfathomable ... it was all about money.

Whitey Bulger Is One Of The Most Violent And Despicable Criminals In Boston History: Prosecutor Asks For Live Sentence - Plus Five

Laurel J. Sweet has been covering the James "Whitey" Bulger trial for the Boston Herald.

Federal prosecutors will advocate convicted serial killer James “Whitey” Bulger spend the rest of his life behind bars — plus a ceremonial five years after that for good measure — when the sentencing portion of his blockbuster trial gets underway Wednesday.

U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper has set aside two days for the event, largely because of the huge number of victims’ family members hoping for the chance to address the court about their decades of pain and suffering.

Bulger, the 84-year-old onetime leader of the Winter Hill Gang of South Boston and Somerville, was convicted in August of 11 of 19 mob murder charges dating back to the early 1970s.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Kelly’s six-page sentencing memorandum filed with Casper today called Bulger “one of the most violent and despicable criminals in Boston history” — one he said “richly deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail.”

Bulger still faces state death-penalty prosecutions for murder in Miami, Fla., and Tulsa, Okla.Kelly noted, “There are no mitigating factors, and defendant Bulger has no redeeming qualities, which would justify any sentence below the one called for by the U.S.”

Whitey Bulger Found Guilty of Racketeering, Conspiracy And Murder

Laurel J. Sweet is covering the Whitey Bulger trial for the Boston Herald.

James J. “Whitey” Bulger has been found guilty of racketeering, conspiracy and murder in a split verdict.

The eight men and four women on the jury deliberated for more than 30 hours. The 32-count indictment before them accuses Bulger of the gangland murders of 19 men and women between 1973 and 1985, money laundering, extortion, drug distribution and illegal firearms possession.

Bulger was accused of physically carrying out nine of the 19 murders he was charged with, either by firearm or strangulation. The case was presided over by Judge Denise J. Casper.

The jury foreman is a stay-at-home dad from the South Shore who was about to start a job at a bank when he was plucked from a record jury pool at U.S. District Court.

Bulger, who’ll turn 84 next month, faces a maximum sentence of life plus 30 years — the same as his former righthand man Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi began serving in 2003 when he pled out to 10 murders.

Feds: FBI-Bulger Deal 'Cancer' In Boston's Past

Laurel J. Sweet is covering the Whitey Bulger trial for the Boston Herald.

The corrupt connection between mobster James “Whitey” Bulger and disgraced FBI agent John “Zip” Connolly was “a cancer” in the city, a prosecutor declared today in the closing arguments in Bulger’s murder and racketeering trial.

Federal prosecutor Fred Wyshak said in U.S. District Court in Boston that the horrific details in the case tells of a time when the city was in a rut.

He said the Bulger/Connolly partnership was “a cancer” in the city of Boston. He all but choked back tears as he went through the 19 alleged murders once more. “It tells you all you need to know about the evil” of Bulger, he said.

Wyshak also said Connolly was hoping to land the police commissioner’s job in Boston — and Whitey’s plugged-in political brother William “Billy” Bulger would help.

Billy was his ticket,

Wyshak added.Wyshak is painstakingly going through each of the 32 counts against Bulger, especially each of the 19 murder counts. And he said the jurors should not think of him as a "Robin Hood" keeping "angel dust and heroin out of South Boston."

Howie Carr On Whitey Bulger Trail: Dirty Rat Goes Out Yellow - Killer Coward At End

Author and Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr is covering the Whitey Bulger trial.

Whitey Bulger, you dirty rat!

In the end, he didn’t have the stones to take the stand. Not much of a surprise, but quite a disappointment, the trial ending not with a bang but a whimper.“I didn’t get a fair trial,“ he told the judge, “This was a sham. Do what youse want with me.

”Don’t worry, weese will. But what’s up with the word “youse,” Whitey? You’re supposed to be Irish, or so your lawyer Jay Carney said in his opening statement approximately 65 witnesses ago, 50 or so of whom swore under oath Whitey was indeed a rat.

And why did you call the trial a “sham?”

Surely Whitey meant to use Woody Allen’s classic description of his trial from the movie “Bananas:”

“It’s a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.”

Whitey also complained his defense was “choked off” — a very poor choice of words, given how he’s charged with murdering the two Debs.

Whitey Bulger Won't Testify At His Trial As Defense Rests

Laurel J. Sweet is overing the Whitey Bulger trial in Boston for the Boston Herald.

A defiant James "Whitey" Bulger said today he will not testify in his own defense, calling his murder and racketeering trial "a sham."

Pat Donahue, the widow of one of the Southie mobster's 19 alleged victims, blurted out in court: "You're a coward!"

"As far as I'm concerned I didn't get a fair trial and this is a sham. Do what youse want with me," Bulger told U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper.

A visibly peeved Bulger maintained the late former U.S. Attorney Jeremiah O'Sullivan "promised to give me immunity." Said for those reasons he was choosing not to testify "involuntarily." He claimed he "protected" O'Sullivan's life.

Howie Carr On The Whitey Bulger Trial: Gump-Like Testimony Says Run, Whitey, Run

Author and Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr is covering the Whitey Bulger trial.

Whitey Bulger got a glimpse yesterday of what awaits him if he takes the witness stand in his own defense later this week.

His taxpayer-funded legal team called their first witness, Robert Fitzpatrick, an ex-FBI agent turned private eye turned author. And maybe it’s a good thing these federal trials aren’t on television, because you wouldn’t want an impressionable young child to watch what happened to the 73-year-old fed.

Not that Fitzie’s performance was exactly stellar when he was testifying for Bulger. He kept referring to him as an “informant,” which is exactly what King Rat claims not to be. But then prosecutor Brian Kelly got up for the cross-examination, and this was his first question:“Mr. Fitzpatrick, is it fair to say you’re a man who likes to make up stories?”

“I beg your pardon,” Fitzpatrick responded. Then Kelly asked him if it was “fair to say” that he claimed to have arrested Mafia underboss Jerry Angiulo way back when?Fitzpatrick: “I put the arrest on Angiulo.”Kelly: “That is a bold-faced lie.”It went downhill from there.

Not only did Fitzpatrick claim to have “arrested” Angiulo, he also found the rifle that killed Martin Luther King Jr. He’s a veritable federal Forrest Gump.

Howie Carr: Stevie Flemmi, Whitey Bulger's Former Partner In Crime, Takes Bubba Cue

Author and Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr is covering the Whitey Bulger trial in Boston.

Stevie Flemmi, meet Bill Clinton.Turns out, the cold-blooded serial killer claims he never had “intercourse” with his common-law stepdaughter before his partner Whitey Bulger strangled her to death at the age of 26.

“She was a very fragile woman,” Flemmi said, wistfully, almost as tenderly as he’d earlier described Whitey’s double-edged knife, and the gang’s old grease gun that the cops found in Whitey’s Santa Monica lair.

But now it was the cross-examination, and Flemmi admitted, yet again, to having oral sex with Deborah Hussey. Bill Clinton claimed that wasn’t real sex. He read it in the Bible, he claimed. Apparently so did “The Rifleman.”

Flemmi: Whitey Bulger Was A Pedophile

Laurel J. Sweet is covering the Whitey Bulger trial for the Boston Herald.

Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi accused former Winter Hill Gang partner James “Whitey” Bulger of being a pedophile this morning on his third day of testimony, charging his fellow aging mobster once spirited a 16-year-old girl away to Mexico.

“You want to talk about pedophilia, right over there at that table,” Flemmi, 79, angrily gestured at Bulger, 83, from the witness stand as the accused killer of 19 shot him a cold glare.

Flemmi’s frustrated outburst came as Bulger’s defense attorney Hank Brennan hammered Flemmi for a second day about his sexual relationship with and subsequent murder of his common-law stepdaughter Deborah Hussey.

In Whitey Bulger Trial, It's Down To Rat Vs. Rat

Howie Carr, the Boston Herald columnist and author of Rifleman: The Untold Story of Stevie Flemmi, Whitey Bulger's Partner, is covering the Whitey Bulger trial in Boston.

The feds weren’t kidding. Stevie Flemmi is ready, and “The Rifleman” came out swinging yesterday, in his first 10 minutes on the stand at the end of the session.

Stephen Rakes mourned as death probedIf I’m Whitey Bulger, I don’t think I slept very well down in Plymouth last night. This is going to be a very long day in the courtroom for the rat who claims he’s not a rat.

This is going to be the heavyweight championship of rats. Today decides who is the King of Ratville.

The line that Flemmi delivered that got all the play was when he was asked the nature of his relationship with Bulger, and he replied, “Strictly criminal.”

Whitey can live with that. What he can’t abide is the answer Stevie gave when he was asked how many times he and Whitey met with the FBI, specifically Zip Connolly.“Numerous, numerous times. Hundreds of times.”

The Whitey Bulger Trial: Juror Cries As Steven "The Rifleman" Flemmi Testifies On Girlfriend's Death

Laurel J. Sweet is covering the Whitey Bulger trail for the Boston Herald.

Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi testified today he was a man torn apart by the intense jealousy of his partner James “Whitey” Bulger and his needy young lover Debra Davis — a tug-of-war he said Bulger won by throttling Davis in 1981.

“It affected me. It’s going to affect me until the day I die,” Flemmi said of his reluctant decision to help kill the bombshell in a house his mother had just purchased in South Boston next door to Bulger’s brother, former state Senate President William “Billy” Bulger.

“I loved her,” Flemmi said dispassionately of Davis, “but I wasn’t in love with her.”

... At least one juror broke down in tears, no doubt recalling the stomach-turning photographic images from state police of Davis’ skeleton wrapped in rope and her skull, still matted with blond hair, in a plastic bag, as she was found in her crude grave.
