Richard Boone: The Cowboy Who Hated Horses

C. F. Eckhardt at the Seguin Gazette offers an interesting piece on the life and career of actor Richard Boone, the star of one of my favorite TV shows when I was a kid, Have Gun, Will Travel.

Richard Boone not only starred in the iconic “Have Gun, Will Travel” TV series, he played in or starred in a number of Westerns, including three with his good friend, John Wayne.

In two of those he played a villain — “Big Jake” and “The Shootist,” which was Wayne’s last film.

...Then came Paladin — and Boone hated horses.

The horse he rode — when he actually rode a horse, most of his riding scenes were done by stunt men—was a gelding about twenty years old that probably should have been retired several years earlier. When HGWT was cancelled, he was asked what kind of a show he’d do next. He said “Something without horses!”

  1. Boone did most of his own riding on the show. He did ride the same horse from the third season on. As far as the age of the horse , I have no idea.

  4. I can't figure a man who does several westerns and hates horses. He should have done modern shows.
